History

Amersham A Cappella was founded in 1982, as Chiltern Harmony under the direction of Ian Stone.

The chorus won several accolades including the Gold Medal at the Annual Convention of the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (LABBS) in 1994 and Sainsbury’s Choir of the Year in 1996.  When Helen Lappert became Musical Director in 2005 the chorus consisted of 23 members. In 2008, Chiltern Harmony was renamed Amersham A Cappella and now has more than 70 members performing an exciting and varied repertoire of both Barbershop and contemporary a cappella arrangements.

Under Helen’s expert musical direction the chorus has gone on to win many more national and international awards. In 2010, Amersham A Cappella won its first Gold Medal at LABBS. A string of medals followed including, more recently: 2018 International Gold Medal, Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS); 2018 European Silver Medal, European Barbershop Convention (EBC) and 2016 Gold Medal Champions, LABBS. Other achievements include winning the title of Good Housekeeping Choir of the Year in 2010 and the position of ‘runner up’ at the International Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards in 2016 for its first album - ‘WOW! It’s Amersham A Cappella’.
